Item! Shark Attack in Northern California!
OK it has been a couple days since this happened and I know I am late to the feeding frenzy on this one but one of the points of this bloggy thing is to report on shark news and here is some. I have heard multiple reports on this one. Initially it was reported that the shark was 16 feet, now they are saying it was somewhere between 17-20 feet. I got this from washingtonpost.com
Shark Survivor: It Was Just Like 'Jaws' The Associated Press Friday, October 21, 2005; 10:25 PM BODEGA BAY, Calif. -- The water was eerily glassy and calm. Then a shark at least 17 feet long attacked from behind, leaving a young surfer desperately trying to defend herself. "It was weird. I was sitting out there thinking, 'Wow, this feels shark-y to me,'" Megan Halavais, 20, said Thursday. "It was straight out of 'Jaws.'" Halavais was paddling into the water off Salmon Creek Beach in Sonoma County in Northern California on Wednesday when the shark attacked. Halavais, an experienced surfer, said she got away after she hit the shark on its tail. The shark was probably 17 to 20 feet long, judging from the size of the bite, said Sonoma County Sheriff's Department spokesman Lt. Roger Rude. "It's big. I couldn't fit my arms around its tail. Its fin, its main dorsal fin, was like taller than me," Halavais recounted for reporters at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital as she sat in a wheelchair, her bandaged leg extended in front of her. "I was just paddling," she said. "It came from behind. Sharks, if they want to eat you, they don't want you to see them before they eat you." "I felt a bump hit, I think that's when he bit me. I think I grabbed around _ I was like trying to throw my body on top by his dorsal fin and then grab the tail. I was trying to push. I was just pushing it away." Halavais, from Santa Rosa, was helped from the water by other surfers. She was taken to a hospital with a bite that stretched from her thigh to her calf. She was listed in fair condition. The beach has been the site of several shark attacks in recent years. Police believe the shark likely was a great white. They have closed the beach and warned surfers in nearby locations. "The water was really glassy, really calm, really clear like you could see straight to the bottom," Halavais said. "Happy to be alive."
Victim Megan, not the skinniest surfer girl, maybe the shark removed a couple of unwanted pounds
First of all, even though Victim Megan says, "Wow, this feels shark-y to me," let me say that I had nothing to do with it. I like my surfer girls a bit plumper and at this time of year I am breeding off the coast of Baja which is way down the coast from Sonoma. But thanks Megan for thinking of me and dropping my name, I am flattered. This is a classic Great White shark attack. If this 17-20 foot shark was really feeding this woman would be dead, trust me. The shark just gave her a little love-bite. Just a tasty-taste. The shark then realized that her flesh didn't have a high enough fat content to justify burning the calories to consume her. A 17-20 foot Great White shark eating a 120 pound surfer girl would be like a 120 pound surfer girl running three miles just to eat a carrot stick...the ends just don't justify the means. The attack would burn more calories than the meal. Trust me on this one, a couple more shark attacks like this and this Great White will starve to death. If people want Great Whites to exhibit real predation on them they should take the morbidly obese, you know those guys and gals that weigh at least 400 pounds, the ones that get gastric bypass surgery, put them in a black wet suit, or if you can't find a wet suit that big, dip them in black liquid latex, roll them in chum and them drop them off Bodega Bay!!! Now that would be a meal comparable to a nice juicy California Sea Lion.
