Shark Fishing is Not Macho
Great White Hunters is a short video that took third place in the Tropfest 2008 short video contest. It glorifies the Great White Shark fishing adventures of a group of beer buddies from New South Wales, Australia who shore fish for large Sharks. Here:
But aren't Great Whites protected under Australian law? Yeah. But technically, since they are catching the Sharks with relatively safe tackle, tagging the Sharks, and releasing them, it slides. Gary Doust's video claims that over the course of 10 weeks, the boys caught and released 11 Great White Sharks. He also claims that there is no evidence that any of the Sharks "died from the experience." But, there is also no evidence showing that any of the Sharks didn't die. At any rate, are these beer buddies the people that should be responsible for tagging these Sharks for research purposes? Clearly not. But this isn't even the point of the video. The point of the video is--aren't these some good blokes? Great White Hunters is aptly named. The Great White Hunter is a 19th century expression of colonialism. The idea of the Great White Hunter represents the virile but good-humored European male's dominance of African people and nature. While sweeping philosophies of racial superiority have fallen out of the mainstream, man's dominance over nature is still the dominant paradigm. Since shooting Tigers in the face is not overwhelmingly accepted, at least in the West, trophy Shark fishing is one of the last acceptable types of hunting with the sole purpose of glorifying the superiority of man over nature. Well, Shark fishing also serves one more purpose, to compensate for the shame that Shark fishermen invariably have to suffer through their entire lives, the shame of having inadequate penises. That is where the humor comes in for me at least.
Here is the just desserts for all Great White hunters and Shark fishermen in general:

Quint, though, is pretty macho,
