Dantesque Sea Lion Megadeath
At least 300 Sea Lions were found dead or dying near Iquique, in northern Chile. Some are blaming El Niño conditions, others blame the decline of food stocks due to the overfishing of anchovies, but the most likely culprit for a die-off like this is illegal dumping by the local foreign-owned molybdenum plant. The plant belongs to the multinational mining conglomerate Collahuasi.
From their website:
Collahuasi is owned by subsidiaries of Xstrata plc (44%), Anglo American plc (44%) and a consortium of Japanese companies led by Mitsui & Co., Ltd. (12%)
Lovely!
