A CULT church leader from Jarrow who masterminded a worldwide shark smuggling racket faces eight years in jail.
Kevin Thompson, 48, netted more than £500,000 by exporting baby leopard sharks to customers all over the world from his base in California, USA.
The species is protected, and it is illegal to catch and sell specimens less than 3ft long.
Thompson and five co-accused were trapped by a classic FBI sting after fisheries workers in the UK became suspicious of his activities.
He has pleaded guilty to criminally catching and selling thousands of undersized juvenile leopard sharks, and could face a fine of up to $1m as well as a lengthy prison term.
Thompson, a father of five, has been a pastor for 14 years in the Unification World Church – better known as the Moonies – and was head of the Bay Area Family Church, Holy Spirit Association, San Leandro.
The scam started when boat owner Thompson realised the vessels he used for taking teenagers on fishing trips could be used for catching sharks.
He paid local fishermen as little as £1 each for baby sharks, before selling them on to dealers for up to £18.
The smuggling operation became so big that Thompson had to store some of the sharks in his church.
Former Newcastle man John Newberry, 34, who testified against him, said fishing poles, line, hooks and bait were stored at a sushi warehouse, along with three shark boats.
There was also a large shack at the rear of the premises, where they kept live baby sharks.
Several hundred leopard sharks were shipped to the UK, and after suspicions were raised by an official from the Fish Health Inspectorate in Weymouth, Dorset, they were traced back to Thompson in California.
The FBI launched a sting operation, where a special agent called at Thompson's house to buy a shark.
The extent of the scam, which had been running 10 years, was exposed when his bank accounts, airline papers and church records were investigated.
FBI investigators believe Thompson, who will be sentenced in a few weeks' time, may have started shark smuggling to impress the Moonies' leader, the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, who has called himself King of the Ocean.
