Dear Sharky,
This is not a smart assed question by any means. But I am curious how similar the means are for recording shark numbers from today compared to the 1950's?

This is a good question. Back in the day, I think much of the survey information was literally done by numbers of Sharks caught in nets and on longlines, etc.

Now, there is tagging, diver observation, underwater baiting and videotaping...but there is still bycatch surveys done...the methodologies are complex and he-who-channels-Sharky is more of an armchair Shark-behavior expert enthusiast rather than a research methodology expert enthusiast.

But, there are some people that cruise this sight that may know a bit more on this stuff...Are you listening Kiwi Mafia?

I think you're pretty close there Mr. carcharias (or may I call you Carcharodon?). Aerial observation is another common method. There would also have been (and still are) dedicated anorak-wearing types who went out and chummed up to see who was in the area.

Thank you both very much! Just proves there is probably no "overestimation" on the numbers of declining sharks and marine life. Too bad, I was hoping for a miracle.

Unfortunately modern techniques are probably better at accurately evaluating true populations than they were 50 years ago. If the recent data is true, let's hope the earlier counts were waaay over exaggerated.

...Somehow I don't think they were though :(
