EU Moves to Ban Fishing for Spiny Dogfish, Porbeagles, and Angel Sharks
Porbeagle Sharks: the Great White's smart ass cousin.
The European Commission may very soon ban all fishing for Spiny Dogfish, Porbeagle, and Angel Sharks when they set fisheries quotas for 2009. This is extremely good news as the population of these species is on the brink of collapse. Spiny Dogfish, also known as Spurdog, are particularly vulnerable because they have one of the longest gestation periods in the animal kingdom. Female Dogfish remain pregnant for nearly two years. Dogfish are prized in Germany and served as schillerlocken--"smoked belly flaps."

They are mislabeled as "rock salmon" in the UK and Ireland for fish and chips. They are also eaten extensively in France, Belgium, and Italy. Pregnant females fetch a bigger profit. Nice!

Porbeagle Sharks are treasured for their meat in France and Spain. And all Shark species are targeted for their fins which are sold to Asia for Shark Fin Soup. And Angel Sharks? They're critically endangered just plain fucked.

Not all my posts can be slapstick laugh riots...Shark Fin Soup is Bad Food!

The bycatch rate is fairly low.
Many thanks
